Jwala wants Azhar as father-in-law?

She made headlines following her alleged link-up with former cricketer Md Azharuddin, which she rubbished as a rumor, and blamed it all on someone from the Badminton Association of India who was trying to malign her. Well, looks like she is set to make news again.

Commonwealth gold medalist Jwala Gutta has been spotted hanging out with Azharuddin's son Asaduddin once too often. Whether it is at a local spa in her hometown Hyderabad, or a health club, at parties or store launches, and even a felicitation, the duo has always been spotted together.

"Asaduddin is there at every match Jwala plays in Hyderabad, and he follows her game keenly. And not just that, after every game, Jwala always chooses to go and sit beside Asaduddin and the twosome can be spotted chatting away. They come together and leave together," says a source.

Another source informs that she was recently spotted at an IPL after-match party, once again in the company of Asaduddin. The duo did shy away from being clicked together — Jwala even snapped at a photographer —but they were clicked nonetheless.

Another source adds that Jwala, however, maintains that she and Asaduddin are just friends. She knows him since a long time and hence, whenever she goes out, she is with him. Asaduddin is an upcoming player and is hoping to shine in the next two years, so a protective Jwala does not want him to get involved in any controversy whatsoever.

A source from the BAI says, "We always knew that she was going out with Azharuddin, but if she has been spotted with his son Asaduddin too often, then I don't know..."

In July last year, Jwala was reported to be dating Azharuddin after stories of the latter gifting her a BMW began doing the rounds. It was soon learned that Jwala and her husband of five years, fellow shuttler Chetan Anand had been living separately for over two years. Jwala denied that there was anything between her and Azhar or that she was responsible for the Azhar-Sangeeta split. In August, however, Jwala filed for a divorce from Chetan and they have not really been on talking terms ever since.

The controversy did good for Jwala, making her grab headlines in every other newspaper. On the professional front also, she came back with a bang, winning the gold at the Commonwealth Games along with Ashwini Ponappa. Let's see what this one does for her.

Noida: Two 'depressed' sisters stay locked up for seven months, rescued

Noida: Two sisters holding doctorate degrees, who locked themselves up in their home for seven months after falling into deep depression over the death of their father, were rescued on Tuesday in a state of acute starvation, police said.

The women, left to fend for themselves and in a state of utter loneliness, have been admitted to Kailash Hospital in Noida.

According to a police officer, the sisters - Anuradha Behl, 41, and Sonali, 38 - had shut themselves up in their house No.326 in the posh Sector-29 of Noida for seven months after their father Colonel (retired) O.P. Behl died two years ago.

They had lost their mother earlier.

However, Superintendent of Police (City) Anant Dev said their father had died in an accident and their mother shortly afterwards.

Anuradha suffered multiple organ weakness due to insufficient vitamin intake, said Sarika Chandra, the attending doctor at Kailash Hospital.

Sonali is also in a state of deep depression, she added.

Police, acting on information from neighbours, had to break open the door when the sisters -- both unmarried -- refused to open the door, Anant Dev said.

Their younger brother Vipin Behl, who lives in Sector-50 of Noida with his wife and children, and a maternal uncle used to look after them. But after falling into depression, the two sisters were not cooperating with them, said inspector Vijay Prakash of Sector-20 police station.

'After the death of their parents, Vipin and a maternal uncle used to support them. When their savings exhausted and the sisters stopped cooperating with them, the brother and the uncle dragged their feet,' the police officer said.

'That situation forced the sisters into isolation. Taking a note of severe isolation the Residents Welfare Association officials contacted social activist Usha Thakur after they failed to persuade the sisters to open the door,' the officer added.

The two women had a dog, which died about two and half months ago.

Anuradha has done her Ph.D after completing her course in chartered accountancy. She had left her accountancy practice after her parents' death.

Sonali also has doctorate in history.

'When we opened the door, everyone started vomiting because of the foul smell. The elder woman was half naked on her bed. She could not speak and did not know what was going on. So I called Kailash Hospital,' Usha Thakur, who accompanied police, told reporters.

According to Vijay Prakash, Anuradha was still unconscious while being brought out of the house, but Sonali was stable and could manage to speak.

When the door was opened, the women asked for water.

Thakur said: 'I think they are mentally disturbed... their brother also left them and went to Sector 50. There was no one to console or talk to them.'

Their food came from some canteen, she said.

'The neighbours said the food used to be kept outside the door,' she added.

According to Sandeep Vohra, a psychiatrist, it could be a case of extreme emotional withdrawal.

Noida, Apr 13 : One of the two sisters, rescued from their Noida flat after they locked themselves in following severe depression over their father's death, died at Kailash Hospital here Wednesday.

"Anuradha, the elder sister, died at around 7.30 a.m. A lot of factors led to the death," Superintendent of Police Anant Dev told IANS in this suburban city adjoining the capital.

Psychologists suggest acute social apathy led to sisters' plight

It could also be social apathy towards mental health that leads to situations like in Noida where two sisters remained locked up in their house for seven months while the neighbourhood failed to realise the gravity of their pain, psychologists said.

"There is so much stigma attached to mental health in the society that people don't come out to help those in need," city based psychologist Monica kumar told IANS Tuesday.

There is acute lack of awareness about the ways to help such people who move away into isolation, Kumar added.

Instead of abandoning people suffering from similar mental condition, they should be given proper psychological counselling and care and be involved in community activities, said the expert.

Psychologists are, however, uncertain about what caused the sisters to take such an extreme step.

'It could be extreme depression or depression underlined by some sort of psychotic element in it. In a case like this, both the daughters must have been emotionally dependent on their father and he may have been the one taking all the decisions for them,' said Vohra.

This could also happen to people who are deeply introvert in nature, he added.

Noida: A day after the two Behl sisters were rescued from their Noida house, 47-year-old Anuradha, the elder sister, died on Wednesday.

An inquiry has been ordered into the self-confinement of two Noida sisters for seven months. A team of the National Commission for Women will investigate whether the two sisters - Anuradha Behl and Sonali Behl - were neglected and will submit its report within 15 days.
The enquiry was ordered just a few hours after Anuradha died.

Having locked themselves up without food for months, the younger of the two sisters, Sonali, continues to battle for her life and is monitored now also by a psychiatrist. Their brother Vipin says he didn't know it had come down to this.

"I was helpless. Even if I wanted to help them, they refused everything...my hands were tied. I am the youngest one and they were not listening to me," said Vipin Behl.

The National Commission for Women slammed civil society for what they called neglect but neighbours of the Behl sisters said they had tried several times to help, but were told categorically to stay away.

At the time of Vipin's wedding, we came to know that the sisters find the match and she took all the initiatives...she was very thrilled, exited and happy," their neighbour Dr MJU Khan.

The owner of the grocery shop, from where the sisters usually ordered from, said he had rarely seen the sisters at his shop. All purchases were made over the phone and the payment, surprisingly, made through cheques.

Both the sisters were educated - Anuradha was a chartered accountant while Sonali was an IT professional.

Both parents died in quick succession. Father in a road accident in Agra in 1991 and Mother in 1995 of a heart attack. A year later, Anuradha quit her job in 1996.

In 2007, their brother Vipin got married and a few months later, moved out. Sonali too left her job in 2008 because she wasn't happy. And their dog died in 2009.

Vipin said, he last saw his sisters in September 2010 and they told him to leave them alone.

Neighbours said that both the sisters were very close to their brother, and were devastated when Vipin and his wife left home after their marriage. A dog they had adopted, died in 2009, and could have been yet another reason why the sisters went into depression.

Psychiatrists at the hospital attending to Sonali said, it is extremely difficult medicaly to determine when the two first showed the signs of mental illness.

Was it helplessness when their parents died? Loneliness after a brother left home? Grief at having lost a pet or some thing more? One can only imagine what went on behind the doors of the Behl residence in Noida.

Came close to getting married four times: Ratan Tata

He is 73 years old. One of India's biggest industrialists, a very public figure, and yet one who has rarely talked about his personal life. Now, in an interview to a US-based TV channel, Ratan Tata has revealed that he was "seriously" in love four times and came close to getting married each of those times. Tata is one of India's most prominent bachelors.

The most serious of these relationships, Tata says on CNN International's Talk Asia programme, was one when he was working in the US in the 1960s. He recounts, "...the only reason we didn't get married was that I came back to India and she was to follow me and that was the year of the, if you like, the Indo-Chinese conflict and in true American fashion this conflict in the Himalayas, in the snowy, uninhabited part of the Himalayas was seen in the United States as a major war between India and China and so, she didn't come and finally got married in the US thereafter."

But never-been-married Tata has no regrets. He says in the interview that each of the four times that he came close to getting married, he "backed off in fear or for one reason or another." Each occasion was different, he says, but adds, "in hindsight when I look at the people involved; it wasn't a bad thing what I did. I think it may have been more complex had the marriage taken place."

And for those that like a twist in the tale, Ratan Tata says yes when asked if any of the people he was in love with is still in the city. But refuses to elaborate.

The interview also has Tata talking about the succession plan in the Tata group of companies once he turns 75 in December 2012 and retires. He also talks at length about the Tata dynasty and legacy, how he has grown his business empire and about recent scandals. The interview first airs today.

Talks with Pakistan to continue despite 26/11 revelations: Krishna

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna on Wednesday said talks with Islamabad will continue even though Pakistani-born Canadian citizen Tahawwur Hussain Rana and accomplice David Headley have reportedly admitted that Pakistan's spy agency ISI was involved in masterminding the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.

Both Headley and Rana, in their testimony to US interrogators, have accepted working on behest of the ISI and the Pakistani government, reports said.

Asked if the revelation will change the Indian government's stand, Krishna said the two issues were different.

"Peace talks will go on, cricket matches will go on and simultaneously our relentless efforts will continue to bring to justice all those responsible for the heinous crime against India in Mumbai. These are two different aspects," Krishna said.

He said the Rana and Headley's confession will be taken up with the Pakistan government.

"We will certainly take it up. We are in constant touch with the Pakistan government through our diplomatic channels," he said.

Mumbai terror attack: LeT's Tahawwur Rana confirms Pakistan government, ISI's 26/11 role

NEW DELHI: In a crucial disclosure that confirms the direct role of Pakistani state actors in the 26/11 conspiracy, arrested LeT operative Tahawwur Hussain Rana has told a US court that he had provided material support for the attacks "at the behest of the Pakistani government and the ISI, and not the LeT". Rana, along with US citizen David Headley , had allegedly prepared the ground for the Mumbai carnage.

In court documents that have surfaced ahead of his April 16 trial in Chicago, Rana says his acts of providing material support to terrorists in the Mumbai attacks, as alleged by US prosecutors, "were done at the behest of the Pakistani government and the ISI, not the Lashkar terrorist organisation". The documents also cite Rana invoking his friend David Headley's Grand Jury testimony in which the latter has also implicated the ISI.

The shocking revelations come at an inconvenient time for the Manmohan Singh government, which had only recently agreed with Pakistan in Thimpu that 26/11 should not become a sticking point to resumption of their dialogue. It was in line with this Thimpu spirit that the Indian prime minister invited his Pakistani counterpart Yusaf Raza Gilani to watch the Indo-Pak cricket semi-final at Mohali last month.

This was followed by home-secretary-level talks where both India and Pakistan agreed to host each other's commissions for 26/11 probe, besides agreeing to release inadvertent crossers and ironing out visa issues. The dialogue will proceed further with the defence and commerce secretaries of the two nations due to hold talks in Islamabad later this month.

Rana's direct reference to Pakistani government and ISI as masterminds of the 26/11 attack comes at an equally inopportune time for both Pakistan and the US. ISI chief Shuja Pasha is currently visiting Washington DC with a laundry list of demands as the US tries to repair ties strained over the Raymond Davis episode. The Obama administration, according to reports, is scrambling to control fallout from the court proceedings in an effort to save its ally from being publicly exposed as a state sponsor of terrorism.

The disclosure that Rana and Headley have implicated the Pakistani government and its intelligence agency in the Mumbai attack came about indirectly when an Illinois district court rejected Rana's attempt at what is known as a "public authority defense", in which the defendant essentially argues that he did something at the behest of a government or its official authority.

Proposing the defence, Rana told the Illinois court that "he acted pursuant to his actual or believed exercise of public authority on behalf of the government of Pakistan and the ISI". This defense, Rana argued, would give him immunity from criminal proceedings in US courts under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act as "the ISI has authority to act in India to protect Pakistan's national interests" and he was acting at the behest of the ISI.

Get Latest BSE Quote BHEL to hire 20,000 in 11th Plan period

Chennai, Oct. 27 BHEL will hire 20,000 people in the 11th Plan period (2007-12), the Chairman and Managing Director of the public sector engineering giant, Mr A.K. Puri, has said. Nine thousand of them would be engineers, he said, at a press conference here.

BHEL is expanding its capacity. Today, it can make power equipment of 6,000 MW a year and it intends to take this up to 15,000 MW a year by 2009 and to 20,000 MW by 2011. This will require concurrent augmentation of manpower.

India intends to add 78,577 MW, at an estimated outlay of Rs 10.31 lakh crore, during the 11th Plan period. The power sector was caught on the wrong foot in the 10th Plan, when the actual addition to generation capacity was 21,180 MW against the target of 41,110 MW.

While the Ministry of Power has blamed equipment suppliers, mainly BHEL, for the lapse, BHEL has defended itself saying that orders were bunched during the last two years of the Plan period.

Dr R.C. Panda, Secretary, Department of Heavy Industries, under which comes BHEL, said in an informal chat with newspersons that power utilities such as NTPC have not standardised their projects, making it difficult for equipment suppliers to be prepared for bulk orders.
Power equipment market

While BHEL strives to keep its share in the power equipment market, it also intends to grow in other areas. For example, it expects its business from Defence to increase to Rs 1,000 crore, from Rs 300 crore at present.

Today, it manufactures naval and field guns and armoured vehicles. Mr Puri told Business Line that the Ministry of Defence had recently shortlisted BHEL for the supply of 10 types of equipment (names not divulged).

BHEL is positioning itself as a natural choice for overseas Defence equipment suppliers, who will need to procure 30 per cent of the value of their supplies from within India, under the ‘offset clause’ in Defence contracts.

Two other areas that BHEL is serious on are equipment for the Railways and the oil industry. For the railway business, BHEL is close to forging technology alliances for a range of products, such as signalling equipment, traction motors and rakes.

Similarly, for oil industry equipment, mainly onshore and offshore drilling rigs, BHEL is in talks with a few overseas companies for technology. Mr Puri ruled out BHEL getting into ship building.
